leverden partners with Cheetah.org to support Namibian conservation

As a global heritage brand on a quest for the world's most healing fragrances, we take inspiration from cultures unlike ours - often these are better connected with nature or less immersed in modernity, with preserved rituals we relish in discovering on our travels.

It's in our product development that we get to transcend the realm of home fragrance & skincare as consumer categories, and grow our corporate responsibility, stewardship, and reverence for the natural world.

Today, we are proud to unveil a new product and impact partnership that embodies our commitment to preserving the fragile ecosystems of our planet. Inspired by the untamed spirit of the Namibian wilderness, where the new Bushman Fragrance originates, we have joined hands with the Cheetah Conservation Fund, led by Dr. Laurie Marker.

About Namibia and our partners at Cheetah.org

Namibia, with its blue coasts, sprawling deserts, and thriving wildlife, is a land where the cheetah - the fastest land animal on Earth - roams freely, emblematic of grace, agility, and survival. The Cheetah Conservation Fund, nestled amidst these captivating landscapes, tirelessly endeavors as part of the Namibian Conservancy to protect these magnificent creatures and their habitats, embodying our shared vision of safeguarding the natural world.

About the Bushman Fragrance

As we infuse new products with the finest, sustainably sourced ingredients, we do so with utmost care for the cultures from which they originate, and respect for the ecosystems that nurture these cultures.

The Bushman fragrance profile is a tribute to the Himba tribe of Namibia, who use the fallen bark from the desert succulent sarcocaulon mossamedense in incense and as a fire starter. When a part of the plant dies, the soft interior decomposes over time leaving behind fragrant hollow sleeves of bark.

The bark possesses a unique and enduring, soft, sweet Amber fragrance that is used in incense, This resinous wax is traditionally used by the Himba as a candle and as a fragrant fire starter.

The Himba Tribe of Namibia

The Himba tribe (dating back 500 years ago) are an indigenous community made up of semi-nomadic people found in Kunene Region of northern Namibia and along the Line River in southern Angola. Due to the scarcity of water in this region, women are not allowed to use water for washing. Ochre pigment is used to cover their face and body to protect their skin from the sun and repel bugs. Himba women will take a daily smoke bath to maintain personal hygiene. Charcoal is added into a bowl of herbs and will wait for the smoke to ascend. Due to the heat, the body will start to perspire and for a full-body wash, the women will cover themselves with a blanket so that the smoke gets trapped underneath the fabric.

Fragrance notes: the fragrance is revealing the  resinous, smoky and warm  facets of this unique ingredient. The result give this impression of a very spiritual and shooting perception, driving you into a meditative state.

With every Bushman Candle purchase, we're inviting our community to become a guardian of nature. A portion of the proceeds from every purchase in this collection will directly support the Cheetah Conservation Fund's invaluable work. Your choice empowers us to make a meaningful difference for the preservation of cultures - like the Himba Tribe - still living in close connection with nature.
